A little bit of creative wisdom..

Hello!  Today I'd like to leave you with a quick project tip/lesson that I hope will help you enjoy your creative time even more!

Your creation doesn't have to be perfect.

Now, I know what many of you are probably already thinking, especially if you, like me, have a bit of a perfectionist streak.

"How could I do something like that?!!  I should do my best, shouldn't I?!!  People are going to be expecting perfection from me, so that means that I should be meeting their expectations, right?"

Well, yes and no.

The truth is, doing your best doesn't have to mean being perfect.  I used to think that if my seams didn't perfectly match, then I had to rip them out and redo them, again and again, until I got them perfectly aligned.  It didn't matter if they were even the tiniest fraction off, so small that it wouldn't even be noticeable to anyone but me, that stubborn seam just had to be fixed.  And when this happened, I realized that I wasn't having as much fun with my project as I had beforehand.  That led me to a bit of a revelation.

As I looked at my project with my seam ripper in hand, I noticed that, even though the seam was slightly off, the project itself still looked beautiful.  I took in the whole piece, not each individual component, and I registered that I was, indeed, pleased with it anyway.

So yes, you should do your best, but if you feel that you aren't enjoying the actual process anymore because of the niggling in the back of your mind that calls for absolute perfection, take a deep breath and look at your project.  Think about whether you can live with a small discrepancy, or if it's going to irritate you every time you see the piece.  If you can live with it, by all means, leave it be.  Chances are, you'll be the only one who'll ever know it's there, anyways.  But, if you cannot tear your gaze away from it, or it's a larger one that you still simply must fix, then do so.  You yourself know best of all what you enjoy, what you can bear, and how perfect it must be.

And besides, a little imperfection is what makes it unique.  A person looks at it, and they know that there aren't ten thousand of the very same out there somewhere.  This is your work, your love, in stitches.

Just remember, you are the one putting all of your love, time, and effort into it, but if you don't enjoy it, it will show more than if you leave a barely perceptible error in it.  Because, above all else, you should be the one who enjoys the fruits of your labor most of all!
